Most consumer brands are preparing for the EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) the wrong way

The assumption? “We need to install an end-to-end DPP platform.”

The reality? Under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR – EU 2024/1781), the DPP is simply a structured data exchange layer—not a product you buy off the shelf.

If you manufacture cosmetics, personal care, or packaged goods, the real technical challenge isn’t creating QR codes. It’s connecting three data silos that don’t speak to each other:

  • ERP: Houses batch numbers, production sites, and volume metrics.
  • PLM: Holds active formulations, CAS numbers, and packaging specs.
  • Supplier Portals: Contains recycled content ratios and sustainability certifications.

The Architectural Solution:

Instead of replacing core platforms or migrating to a monolithic DPP tool, modern engineering teams are building decoupled compliance integration layers.

By exposing existing ERP and PLM data through scoped API interfaces, you satisfy ESPR data requirements without disrupting daily operations or locking yourself into proprietary vendor platforms.

Fix the data pipeline first. The QR code is just the final rendering step.

How is your engineering team approaching the ESPR data integration challenge?

What do you think?
