La technologie num\u00e9rique, souvent invisible, rivalise d\u00e9j\u00e0 avec l'industrie a\u00e9rospatiale en termes d'\u00e9missions de carbone, repr\u00e9sentant 2% \u00e0 4% de la production mondiale. Les quelque 11 000 centres de donn\u00e9es du monde entier ont consomm\u00e9 environ 460 TWh en 2022, soit l'\u00e9quivalent de la consommation \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique totale de la France. Comme le souligne Manuel Cubero-Castan de l'EPFL, pour comprendre le \"co\u00fbt total\" des syst\u00e8mes d'IA g\u00e9n\u00e9rative, il faut aller au-del\u00e0 de la simple consommation d'\u00e9nergie op\u00e9rationnelle. Il englobe l'ensemble du cycle de vie : de l'extraction des minerais et de l'assemblage des composants \u00e0 l'\u00e9limination souvent ill\u00e9gale des d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques. L'impact environnemental va donc bien au-del\u00e0 des factures d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 et d'eau du centre de donn\u00e9es.<\/p><p>Historiquement, les centres de donn\u00e9es, malgr\u00e9 une croissance annuelle de 4%, ont r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 maintenir leur consommation d'\u00e9nergie globale relativement stable entre 2010 et 2020 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 d'importantes am\u00e9liorations de l'efficacit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique. Toutefois, l'int\u00e9gration g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e de l'IA g\u00e9n\u00e9rative devrait bouleverser cette tendance.<\/p><h3>L'\u00e9p\u00e9e \u00e0 double tranchant des grands mod\u00e8les linguistiques (LLM)<\/h3><p>L'IA g\u00e9n\u00e9rative, aliment\u00e9e par de grands mod\u00e8les de langage (LLM), consomme de l'\u00e9nergie en deux phases distinctes :<\/p><ol><li><strong>Formation :<\/strong> Cette phase initiale consiste \u00e0 faire passer des t\u00e9raoctets de donn\u00e9es par des algorithmes, ce qui leur permet d'apprendre le contexte et de pr\u00e9dire des mod\u00e8les. Traditionnellement, il s'agit de l'\u00e9tape la plus gourmande en \u00e9nergie.<\/li><li><strong>Inf\u00e9rence (traitement) :<\/strong> R\u00e9pondre aux invites de l'utilisateur. Les LLM \u00e9tant d\u00e9sormais d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle, l'inf\u00e9rence est devenue le principal consommateur d'\u00e9nergie, repr\u00e9sentant 60% \u00e0 70% de l'\u00e9nergie utilis\u00e9e par les syst\u00e8mes d'IA g\u00e9n\u00e9rative, contre 30% \u00e0 40% pour l'apprentissage.<\/li><\/ol><p>Les implications environnementales de ce changement sont importantes. Une seule requ\u00eate ChatGPT consomme environ 3 Wh d'\u00e9nergie, soit dix fois plus qu'une recherche Google classique (0,3 Wh). Si les neuf milliards de recherches quotidiennes sur Google \u00e9taient redirig\u00e9es vers ChatGPT, cela ajouterait 10 TWh \u00e0 la demande mondiale annuelle d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Goldman Sachs Research (GSR) pr\u00e9voit une augmentation de 160% de la consommation d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 des centres de donn\u00e9es au cours des cinq prochaines ann\u00e9es, pour atteindre 3% \u00e0 4% de la consommation mondiale d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, avec des \u00e9missions de carbone qui pourraient doubler d'ici 2030. On estime que la demande d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 li\u00e9e \u00e0 l'IA dans les seuls centres de donn\u00e9es augmentera de 200 TWh par an entre 2023 et 2030, ce qui repr\u00e9sentera pr\u00e8s de 19% de l'\u00e9nergie des centres de donn\u00e9es d'ici \u00e0 2028.<\/p><p>Comme le souligne M. Cubero-Castan, \"si nous commen\u00e7ons \u00e0 utiliser la technologie de l'IA g\u00e9n\u00e9rative \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle, avec des LLM de plus en plus grands, les gains \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques qui en r\u00e9sulteront seront loin d'\u00eatre suffisants pour parvenir \u00e0 une r\u00e9duction des \u00e9missions globales de carbone\".<\/p><h3>Franchir les obstacles : Efficacit\u00e9, ressources et infrastructures<\/h3><p>Si la trajectoire \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique de l'IA semble abrupte, des facteurs att\u00e9nuants et des innovations en cours offrent une lueur d'espoir. Des entreprises comme la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 chinoise DeepSeek d\u00e9veloppent d\u00e9j\u00e0 des programmes d'IA g\u00e9n\u00e9rative plus \u00e9conomes en \u00e9nergie. L'offre limit\u00e9e de ressources mini\u00e8res cruciales pour la production de puces d'IA pourrait \u00e9galement freiner naturellement la croissance. Nvidia, avec sa part de march\u00e9 de 95% dans les puces d'IA, a vu ses trois millions de puces H100 consommer 13,8 TWh en 2024. Les projections pour 2027 montrent que cette consommation pourrait grimper \u00e0 85-134 TWh, ce qui soul\u00e8ve des questions quant \u00e0 l'\u00e9volutivit\u00e9 de la production et \u00e0 son impact sur l'environnement.<\/p><p>En outre, les r\u00e9seaux \u00e9lectriques existants sont soumis \u00e0 une pression consid\u00e9rable. Les centres de donn\u00e9es repr\u00e9sentent d\u00e9j\u00e0 des pourcentages importants de la consommation nationale d'\u00e9nergie dans des r\u00e9gions comme l'Irlande (20%) et la Virginie, aux \u00c9tats-Unis (plus de 25%). Comme le fait remarquer M. Cubero-Castan, construire davantage de centres de donn\u00e9es dans des r\u00e9gions soumises \u00e0 des contraintes en mati\u00e8re d'eau et d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 \"n'est pas toujours le choix le plus durable\". Le simple co\u00fbt financier de la mise \u00e0 l'\u00e9chelle de l'infrastructure d'IA, tel que Google qui a besoin de 400 000 serveurs suppl\u00e9mentaires pour les requ\u00eates d'IA g\u00e9n\u00e9rative pour un montant de $100 milliards, repr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement un obstacle important.<\/p><h3>Le potentiel inexploit\u00e9 : L'IA, catalyseur du changement vert<\/h3><p>Malgr\u00e9 son app\u00e9tit \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique inh\u00e9rent, l'IA rec\u00e8le un immense potentiel pour g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des \u00e9conomies d'\u00e9nergie plus importantes et lutter contre le changement climatique. Comme le soulignent le Forum \u00e9conomique mondial et Deloitte, l'IA peut \u00eatre un puissant outil pour le bien :<\/p><ul><li><strong>Innovation dans le secteur de l'\u00e9nergie :<\/strong> L'IA peut acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer les perc\u00e9es dans le domaine des \u00e9nergies renouvelables, de la gestion des r\u00e9seaux intelligents et du stockage de l'\u00e9nergie.<\/li><li><strong>Consommation pr\u00e9dictive :<\/strong> En analysant les mod\u00e8les, l'IA peut aider les utilisateurs et les services publics \u00e0 pr\u00e9voir et \u00e0 r\u00e9duire la consommation d'\u00e9nergie plus efficacement, en optimisant l'allocation des ressources.<\/li><li><strong>Efficacit\u00e9 op\u00e9rationnelle :<\/strong> Dans les industries, l'IA peut rationaliser les processus, ce qui permet une gestion plus efficace des ressources et une r\u00e9duction des d\u00e9chets.<\/li><li><strong>Recherche avanc\u00e9e :<\/strong> Les ing\u00e9nieurs peuvent utiliser l'IA pour des simulations complexes, ce qui permet des avanc\u00e9es dans les domaines de la mod\u00e9lisation, de l'\u00e9conomie du climat, de l'\u00e9ducation et de la recherche fondamentale.<\/li><\/ul><p>Les centres de donn\u00e9es de la prochaine g\u00e9n\u00e9ration sont con\u00e7us avec une efficacit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique accrue et une capacit\u00e9 flexible. Nvidia travaille activement \u00e0 l'am\u00e9lioration des performances des puces tout en r\u00e9duisant les besoins en \u00e9nergie. L'AIE note que 40% de l'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 des centres de donn\u00e9es sont consacr\u00e9s au seul refroidissement ; des initiatives telles que \"Heating Bits\" de l'EPFL explorent de nouvelles m\u00e9thodes de refroidissement, la r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration de la chaleur, la cog\u00e9n\u00e9ration et l'int\u00e9gration des \u00e9nergies renouvelables. Les chercheurs estiment que 60% de donn\u00e9es entrent aujourd'hui dans cette cat\u00e9gorie, leur stockage \u00e9mettant autant de carbone que trois millions de vols Londres-New York. Des \u00e9v\u00e9nements tels que la Journ\u00e9e du nettoyage num\u00e9rique soulignent la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 urgente pour les individus et les organisations d'\u00e9laguer leurs d\u00e9chets num\u00e9riques.<\/p><p>En fin de compte, si l'impact \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique de l'IA g\u00e9n\u00e9rative ne doit pas \u00eatre n\u00e9glig\u00e9, il s'ajoute actuellement \u00e0 la consommation d'\u00e9nergie d\u00e9j\u00e0 substantielle de la technologie num\u00e9rique aliment\u00e9e par le streaming vid\u00e9o, les jeux en ligne et les crypto-monnaies. La demande mondiale d'\u00e9nergie est principalement d\u00e9termin\u00e9e par la croissance \u00e9conomique, les v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques, la climatisation et l'industrie manufacturi\u00e8re,
